barstow morning
sorry. applying for jobs is more fun than blogging.
ONE fundamental different between a tortoise and a turtle is that a tortoise spends its entire life on land and a turtle doesn’t. Lesson for the day.
There’s a wealth of information on desert tortoises. There are volumes on populations in the mojave desert, sonoran desert, and other places I forget. All this research and all the papers are at my disposal so why am I not diving into it and learning everything I can about desert tortoises?
Well, for one, it feels awfully like school again. Reading scientific papers takes getting used to and I’m not used to it. I hope that as time goes by I’ll get the knack of it but at the moment I feel incredibly undereducated. In this sense, I’d like to once again point out that the desert tortoise project is the complete polar opposite from the hawksbill seaturtle project.
Secondly, I’m not sure how some of this past research relates to the projects I’m working with right now. I think I’m being naive but I know everything I need to know about what I’m doing right now and how to do it. Okay, I AM being naive. Eventually I should be able to ask critical questions because there’s so much to find out about these critters. They’re cryptic and, despite their “slow” movement, are not the easiest animal to study.
More research papers will be read from now on. I’m lucky to be here and I shouldn’t be squandering my time not learning something everyday, no matter how boring it might seem at the moment.
Either Las Vegas is exceedingly less exciting than Hawaii or I’m not looking hard enough.
